Quinoa is a superfood that is easy to cook. You can eat it on it's own or use with many recipes in place of grains.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup quinoa, rinsed
  • 2 cups water or vegetable broth
  • pinch of salt (optional)

Instructions

  • Rinse the Quinoa: Rinse the quinoa under cold water in a fine mesh strainer. This helps remove the natural bitter coating called saponin.
  • Combine Quinoa and Liquid: In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed quinoa, water or vegetable broth, and a pinch of salt (if desired).
  • Bring to a Boil: Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the liquid to a boil.
  • Reduce to Simmer: Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a lid, and let the quinoa simmer.
  • Cooking Time: Allow the quinoa to cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until the liquid is absorbed and the quinoa is tender. You'll know it's done when you see the little white "tails" on the quinoa seeds.
  • Fluff and Rest: Remove the saucepan from heat and let it sit, covered, for about 5 minutes. Then, use a fork to fluff the quinoa to separate the grains.
  • Serve: Your quinoa is now ready to be enjoyed! Use it as a base for salads, bowls, or as a side dish.

Notes

The standard quinoa-to-liquid ratio is 1:2. Adjust the recipe as needed if you're cooking a different quantity.
You can use vegetable broth instead of water to enhance the flavor of the quinoa.
Feel free to add herbs, spices, or seasonings to the cooking liquid for extra flavor.
Quinoa can also be cooked in a rice cooker or using the microwave. Just follow the manufacturer's instructions.
With these simple steps, you'll have perfectly cooked quinoa ready to incorporate into your favorite dishes.
