Additionally, make high-quality rose water that is free from artificial fragrances or additives for the best results. If you experience any irritation or discomfort, discontinue use and consult a dermatologist.

Can I use the rose water without witch hazel as a toner?

Yes, you can absolutely use rose water on its own as a toner without adding witch hazel. Rose water is a gentle and effective toner that offers numerous benefits for your skin. It helps balance the skin’s pH, hydrate, and soothe, making it a fantastic option for a natural toner, especially for those with sensitive skin.

It’s particularly well-suited for those who prefer a straightforward routine without additional ingredients. Just cleanse your face, apply rose water with a cotton pad, and follow with your regular moisturizer or serum.

What does rose water applied on my face do?

Rose water, when applied to your face, offers several benefits due to its natural properties and soothing qualities. Here’s what rose water can do for your skin:

  • Hydration: Rose water is a natural humectant, which means it helps attract and retain moisture. When applied to your face, it provides hydration to your skin, helping to keep it soft and supple.
  • Balancing pH: Rose water helps maintain the skin’s natural pH balance, which is crucial for overall skin health. Balanced skin is less prone to issues like dryness, irritation, and breakouts.
  • Soothing: Rose water has anti-inflammatory and calming properties. It can help soothe irritated or red skin, making it a gentle option for sensitive or inflamed skin types.
  • Refreshing: Spritzing rose water onto your face can provide an instant refreshing sensation, making it a great pick-me-up throughout the day, especially in hot weather.
  • Toning: Rose water can act as a natural toner by helping to tighten and minimize the appearance of pores. This can contribute to a smoother complexion.
  • Antioxidant Boost: Rose water contains antioxidants that help protect your skin from damage caused by free radicals, which can lead to premature aging.
  • Aromatherapy Benefits: The pleasant and delicate scent of rose water can have aromatherapy benefits, promoting relaxation and reducing stress.
  • Cleansing: Rose water can be used to cleanse the skin gently, removing dirt and excess oil. It’s particularly useful as a makeup remover.
  • Prepping for Skincare: Applying rose water before your skincare routine can prepare your skin to absorb subsequent products more effectively.
  • Enhancing Radiance: Regular use of rose water can contribute to a radiant and healthy complexion, giving your skin a natural glow.

Keep in mind that individual results can vary based on your skin type, sensitivity, and any existing skincare concerns. If you’re new to using rose water, it’s a good idea to do a patch test before applying it to your entire face to ensure that your skin tolerates it well. Make a high-quality rose water product without additives or artificial fragrances for the best results.

Title in a square: DIY Rose Water Face Toner. Four photos with roses and rose water, and person dabbing it on face.

Equipment

  • small saucepan with lid
  • fine mesh strainer
  • glass bottle or container with a tight-fitting lid

Ingredients

  • 1 cup distilled water
  • ½ cup rose petals (dried or fresh) – MUST be chemical and pesticide free.
  • 1 – 2 drops rose essential oil (optional)
  • ¼ cup alcohol-free witch hazel

Instructions

If using fresh rose petals

  • If using fresh rose petals, ensure they are pesticide-free and thoroughly rinse them. In a small saucepan, bring the distilled water to a gentle boil.
  • Then reduce to simmer. Add the rose petals to the simmering water and cover the saucepan with a lid.
  • Let the rose petals steep in the water for about 15-30 minutes, allowing their essence to infuse into the water.
  • After steeping, remove the saucepan from heat and let it cool slightly.

If using dried rose petals

  • If using dried rose petals, place them in a heat-resistant bowl. Carefully pour bowling water over the petals in the bowl. Then simply let the petals steep in the water for about 30 minutes.

Continuing Instructions to make rose water face toner

  • Place a fine mesh strainer over a glass bowl or container.
  • Carefully pour the infused rose water through the strainer to remove the rose petals. Press gently to extract all the liquid.
  • Add in the witch hazel to the rose water and gently stir to combine.
  • Optional: Add Rose Essential Oil: If you'd like to enhance the scent and benefits of your rose water toner, you can add 1-2 drops of pure rose essential oil to the strained rose water, and stir again. Essential oil is potent, so a little goes a long way. Be cautious not to overdo it.
  • Transfer the strained rose water (with or without essential oil) into a clean glass bottle or container with a tight-fitting lid. Dark glass bottles are best to help preserve the freshness of the toner.
Store your homemade rose water toner in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.

How to use

  • After cleansing your face, apply the DIY rose water toner using a cotton pad or by spritzing it directly onto your face. Gently pat your skin to ensure the toner is absorbed. Follow with your regular skincare routine, including moisturizer.

Notes

NOTES: Always do a small 24-hour patch test if you are sensitive or allergic.
Shelf Life:
Store in the refrigerator for maximum length storing. Since this toner is made with natural ingredients and doesn’t contain preservatives, it’s best to use it within a week or two. Storing in the fridge can have it last 3 – 4 weeks. If you notice any changes in color, scent, or texture, it’s a sign that the toner has gone bad and should be discarded.
